Three NMMU students were among the top six at the Eastern Cape Junior and Senior Epee Fencing Champs for men, which took place at the NMMU Alumni Boma on April 23.

First year Addo Campus student and captain of the Madibaz fencing team Chad Putnam claimed gold in the junior event.

The 18-year-old was also selected as captain of the men's team for the South African Junior Championships, which are set to take place in Bloemfontein on May 8 and 9.

Putnam placed fourth in the senior event, qualifying him for the senior national team.

Alumnus Jon-Paul Raper won the gold medal, Sebastian Lasevicius, a third year BSc computer science student took silver, while second year BCur student and SRC member Xabiso Nicholas Nyati claimed bronze.

"We are very excited about the performance of these students as they have also been short listed for the NMMU USSA team that will be announced later in May," said head coach Jessica Raper.

She said that students who want to develop critical thinking skills and the ability to problem solve should join fencing.
