This also reinforces the former’s commitment to athlete development, wellness, preventive healthcare and community development through sport.
Bestmed Medical Scheme will support key events on the Madibaz Athletics Club calendar, including its flagship half-marathon and a range of on campus races designed to encourage students, staff and the broader Gqeberha community to get active and prioritise their health.
Madibaz Athletics manager Bernard Petersen said the partnership came at the perfect time, describing it as an exciting opportunity to strengthen athlete development at Nelson Mandela University.
“Staging quality athletics events requires extensive planning, resources and financial support. This partnership ensures we can continue creating platforms where athletes at all levels can thrive.”
Madibaz director of sport Vuyo Bongela emphasised that the collaboration went beyond financial support.
“It reflects a shared commitment to health, wellbeing and performance. These are values that sit at the core of both the Madibaz programme and Bestmed.”
She added that partnerships with the private sector were increasingly important as universities balanced their academic and sporting priorities.
Bestmed’s sponsorship and CSI specialist, Karen Pienaar, said the alignment between the two organisations made the partnership a natural fit.
“Bestmed is dedicated to helping people live healthier, fuller lives through preventative healthcare and active living. Supporting Madibaz Athletics allows us to reach young people, families and the wider Eastern Cape community with that message.”
She added that universities played a vital role in shaping future leaders holistically.
“Sport teaches discipline, teamwork and resilience. By supporting this environment, we’re investing not just in athletes, but in healthier, stronger communities.”
Pienaar said the partnership also strengthened Bestmed’s long-standing relationship with Nelson Mandela University.
“By encouraging participation in events like the Madibaz Half-Marathon, we hope to inspire even more people to make physical activity part of their wellness journey.”
Looking ahead, Petersen is optimistic about what the partnership will help them achieve.
“Our goal is to deliver high-quality races, attract greater participation and build a long-term relationship with Bestmed.
“This sponsorship affirms the professionalism and inclusive spirit of Madibaz Athletics. We remain committed to offering opportunities for all athletes to grow and excel.”
